Holy Baptism is the foundation of the entire Christian life, the portal of life in the spirit («vitae spiritualis ianua») and the door that opens access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and regenerated as children of God, we become members of Christ and are incorporated into the Church and made participants in its mission (cf Council of Florence: DS 1314; CIC, can 204,1; 849; CCEO 675,1): Baptismus est sacramentum regenerationis per aquam in verbo» («Baptism is the sacrament of the new birth by water and the word»: Roman Catechism 2,2,5).
